President of Cannes Lions Visits Hylink Beijing

On April 19th, 2016, Terry Savage, President of Cannes Lions, visited China and made his very first stop at the Hylink Beijing office. During his visit, he delivered a brilliant and inspiring keynote speech centering around the theme of “Creativity Matters”.
In early 2015, during Mr. Savage’s first visit to Hylink Beijing, he took to the stage to speak on the topic of “How to Win a Lion”. He shared several award-winning Cannes Lion cases as well as the secrets to packaging award submissions. This year Terry returned to the company with more of an emphasis on the importance of creativity. He noted that creativity is an irreplaceable driving force behind sales and innovation, and listed a few of his favorite “Creative Effectiveness Lions” from the previous year to showcase examples of ‘great creative’. In Mr. Savage’s opinion, if people don’t understand what ‘great creative’ looks like, they won’t know how to make great creative work.
At Terry’s 2015 speech when the audience was asked “What is creative?”, the answers varied. Some said that it’s a form of self expression, a manifestation of aptitudes, a lateral thinking. Others said that it’s a form of self-exploration, of self-questioning, that it’s the changing of the way one thinks, about changing the world. It’s about having an endless amount of curiosity. This year, three keywords stood out to us as the most mentioned: disruptive, product, and culture. ‘Great creative’ needs to disrupt conventions, to highlight the uniqueness of the products themselves, and to challenge cultural boundaries. Many Cannes Lions awards from last year demonstrated these important notions.
Mr. Savage ended his speech by briefly introducing some of last year’s outstanding Glass Lions for non-profit causes. We were honored to host Mr. Savage at our Hylink Beijing office and anticipate his return.
